chorus

In Greek tragedies, the Chorus served a role as omniscent commentators to the actions taken by the characters voicing the common sense observations the audience themselves were thinking.
Now most forms of dramatic entertainment (such as film and television) have abandoned that ancient literary convention, due to lack of need – they have no common sense for a Chorus to point out.
