Last year, in the Villa Carlotta on Lake Como, I was amazed to see a graceful statue of Terpsichore that appeared to be full of bullet holes and damaged in several places. There was no official explanation, leaving one to speculate wildly on what the poor girl had done to be treated like this. Danced a tango instead of a waltz, failed to come up with a suitable elegy for the twilight of the gods....?
