With no more formal leave-taking or explanation, he clutched the portmanteau, shut the door on his attendant, and climbing on the desk, and rolling himself up as round as a hedgehog, in an old boat-cloak, fell fast asleep.
After a good place to read, a good desk is critical to a good life.
How do you know if you have a good desk?
There is no one quality which defines a good desk.
You may organize your life in its drawers and baskets.
You may sit and stare away from it as you weave the structure of a story or seek the images of a poem.
You may have your computer there and connect to all the world.
Or you may write only to yourself in a blank-book journal with a pen given you by a good friend.
But there is one experience common to all who have a good desk. When you sit down at it, if you pause for a moment, you will feel good and know that the desk is yours.
From my desk, I can see my seven-sided garden in the corner of the yard.
When I have been working long hours at the computer, it eases my eyes and refreshes my spirit to look out and see the purple flowers on the Mexican heather.
