As a little girl, I used to sing the hymn 'He who would valiant be' with great curiosity and quite a lot of trepidation. I knew that eventually I would come to the lines that told me of a mysterious and fearful land (probably at the top of my grandfather's beanstalks) full of monstrous giants  see, »though he with giants fight«  confronted by this even more muscle-bound 'he' (possibly Jack). You doubt it? »His strength the Mories....« And a five-year old knew for sure that the best giants of all were the Mories.

In his acceptance remarks, he noted that if indeed he had seen further, 'It is only because I have stood on the shoulders of giants'  his acknowlegement that science is a dynamic, not static, pursuit
