Meelie had started a sewing co-op inside the prison. This was taken as a sign that she had accepted her life sentence. But soon there was a new scandal when she designed trousers with pockets for both men and women. These garments soon became the fashion among the younger Erewhonians, although wearing them was banned on the grounds of the Musical Banks.
The older I grow, the more trousers seem to suit me. But men don't seem to have the same feeling about skirts, by and large. Strange....
