Social discontent may be determinant in triggering a revolt, rebellion or insurrection which eventually will evolve into a revolution, but it is not a cause in the sense that it can be an object of concern or interest to be served, even by a rebel in search of a cause. Polysemy interferes with both rebellion and cause as meaningful terms.
Although lexicographers seem to favour the »armed resistance« sense as the first meaning, one may reflect that action is not a natural antecedent and wonder if the second meaning is not in fact the first phase of rebellion, armed or not. Indeed, defiance and resistance are first products of reflection or thought, as reactions to given stimuli, such as control or authority.
