Sorry, Old Pirate but I fear Robert Frost may have had an accurate glimpse of eternity:
"Whose woods these are I think I know
His house is in the village though
He will not see me standing here
To see his woods fill up with snow...."
And not just woods the whole of devastated Manhattan looked as though it had been hit by an almighty blizzard at the end.....
Eternity is time that never ends. It may start at some specific time, but it goes on forever.
Or, as the human brain measures time by learning events, if many things are happening then a period of time might only seem like an eternity to you. Clocks exist so you can see how much time everyone else experienced.
Saw a brilliant comment on eternity yesterday. »This eternity's a terrible thing it seems to go on forever and where's it all going to end?« Here, here and so on, ad infinitum.
