The Bells
by Edgar Allan Poe
I
Hear the sledges with the bells –
Silver bells!
What a world of merriment their melody foretells!
How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle,
In the icy air of night!
While the stars that oversprinkle
All the heavens seem to twinkle
With a crystalline delight;
Keeping time, time, time,
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells
From the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells –
From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells.

Slag dumps in Asia Minor and on islands in the Aegean Sea indicate that man learned to separate silver from lead as early as 3000 B.C. Silver occurs native and in ores such as argenite and horn silver; lead, lead-zinc, copper, gold, and copper-nickel ores are principal sources. It is a little harder than gold and is very ductile and malleable, being exceeded only by gold and perhaps palladium. It is stable in pure air and water, but tarnishes when exposed to ozone, hydrogen sulfide, or air containing sulfur.

silver is cold
colder than gold
gleam not glow
fast not slow
metal for night
and pale moon's light
chant this again
with me in the fen
we'll bind him tight
as is our right
silver is cold
colder than gold

We can drink from silver vessals
We can feed from silver bowls
Then I'll give you gilded treasures
Annointed by intoxicating oils
Drenched in riches
Unimaginable
And ornaments of gold
